Welcome to our new Young Members' Officer

branch-squareMy name is Sarah Walsh and I'm the Young Member's Officer and Union Learning Rep for Nottingham City Unison. I've been working for the Council as a Business Support Officer for the past year and half in different teams and I'm currently based in the Youth Offending Team at Isabella Street.

Being a young person can so often mean being at the bottom of the pile in the workplace- insecure contracts and working hours, lower pay and discrimination to name but a few issues faced by young people in the workforce. As your Young Member's Officer, I want to help you practically both in and out of the workplace. Should you require support, advice or just a friendly ear, please feel free get in touch. Young people have been at the forefront of the trade union movement since its inception, and being a member of a trade union today is so vital in fighting back against the challenges that you, as a young person face in the workplace, particularly when the effects of austerity are really hitting home, with attacks on our pay, terms and conditions, and the cuts to our public services, housing and education, which are hitting young workers more and more.

The Young Members Forum for the East Midlands meets every quarter at the East Midlands Regional Centre on Vivian Avenue. Below I've attached some of the dates for our upcoming meetings, which any Young Member can attend and I would absolutely encourage anyone and everyone to do so.

I've attached a few links below; to give you an idea of how to get involved with the brilliant things our Young Members Forum do nationally. Every year, UNISON holds a national weekend for young members, in which roughly 100 of us meet to discuss the good and the bad, to socialise and get involved in shaping UNISON policy. I attended the last weekend in Leicester, and it was absolutely fab!
