Breaking News - We Won!

branch-squareA landmark case was won today at the Supreme Court. The case challenged the UK Government regulations which restrict Local Government Pension Schemes (LGPS) from divesting contrary to UK foreign and defence policy; thereby limiting the possibility of divestment from companies involved in Israel's human rights violations. See International Page for further information on this story and on  other international action groups, links and information.

Coronavirus PPE - Nottm City Council Members

branch-squareUNISON has been in consultation with the council about the provision of appropriate PPE for employees, particularly those working in, or redeployed into, care work. As a result they have produced this Easy Read document for employees. If you work in social care, or are being asked to work in social care, please ensure you are provided with the correct PPE.

If you do not think you have been provided with appropriate PPE you should contact the relevant manager immediately and wait for the PPE equipment to be provided and if necessary stop working until it has been provided as you have a responsibility for your own Health and Safety and that of others. UNISON believes this  is in line with the Corporate Health Safety and Welfare Policy Statement 2019 which states the following:

“Nottingham City Council accepts its duty under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and is committed to providing and maintaining safe and healthy working conditions and appropriate welfare arrangements for all of its employees.”

Under this policy Employees have certain responsibilities.

The two key parts that are applicable are:

Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.

Where an imminent and significant risk to a person’s health or safety exists, the activity being undertaken should be stopped and when safe to do so, their line manager contacted.

NJC Pay Campaign - Latest News

pay-squareThe NJC employers' side was due to meet on 21 January to consider the NJC joint unions' pay claim for 2020. We were expecting the employers to make us an offer.

However after the meeting we received the following message from the employers' side secretariat:

As you know the National Employers met today. It has been agreed that lead members will meet with national union representatives at a meeting of the NJC Executive on 5 February. A further update will follow that meeting."

Following discussions with the other unions and liaising with UNISON's NJC Chair we have agreed the following response:

The unions are astounded to hear that the local government employers – who met on 21 January – still have not made the local government workforce a pay offer. The unions were expecting that one would be made in response to the pay claim submitted back in July 2019.
